The streets that filled in after the station opened in 1925 were plumbed with earthenware clay sewers, and that pipe was only ever meant to sit still. It has not.

The joints have opened. Across the small, flat interwar and early post-war blocks, decades of gentle settling have eased the salt-glazed sections apart at their rubber-ring and mortar joints, leaving gaps a root or a rag will happily find.

The blocks are tight and low. Short runs, shallow falls and boundary trees close to the line mean a single dropped joint can hold back a whole house, because there is little slope to carry waste past the snag.

Bin the fat, never the sink. Cooking oil and pan grease pour away as liquid and set hard as the pipe cools, so scraping it into the bin does more for a kitchen drain than any product poured down after it.

Catch the hair and scraps. A simple strainer over every shower, basin and floor waste stops the hair and food that binds with grease into a plug, and emptying it takes seconds.

Keep roots off the invitation. Fixing a small leak or a weeping joint early removes the damp scent that draws roots toward the pipe in the first place, which matters most on the older tree-lined streets.

Book a camera before you renovate. If a bathroom or kitchen redo is coming, a quick inspection of the drain underneath it saves tearing up fresh tiling to reach a fault that was visible all along.
